Planning a trip to Japan involves a lot of details. Here are the questions I hear most often — answered honestly and completely. If something isn't covered here, just ask.
For general touring and food experiences, 1–2 weeks in advance is usually sufficient. For golf — especially if you want a specific course or a weekend tee time — I recommend at least 3–4 weeks notice, as popular courses book up quickly. For peak seasons (cherry blossom in spring, autumn foliage), earlier is always better. That said, if you're already in Kobe and want to arrange something last-minute, feel free to reach out — I'll do my best.
I'll provide a clear quote before confirming anything. Payment is typically arranged directly between us, either via bank transfer or cash on the day. I will never ask for payment before all details are agreed and confirmed in writing. Any third-party costs (golf green fees, restaurant reservations, transport) are either paid directly by you or included transparently in the total.
Japan's weather can be unpredictable, and I'll always keep a close eye on the forecast for your day. For outdoor activities like trekking or golf, I'll discuss alternatives if serious weather is expected — whether that's a modified route, a different activity, or rescheduling if your dates allow. Light rain is generally manageable for most activities and I can advise on appropriate gear. We'll communicate closely in advance to make sure you're comfortable with whatever plan we settle on.
Cancellations made more than 72 hours before a confirmed booking are fully refundable, minus any non-refundable third-party costs already incurred (such as golf course deposits). Cancellations within 72 hours may be subject to a partial fee depending on the activity and any bookings already made on your behalf. I'll always be fair and transparent, and I understand that travel plans change — please just let me know as soon as possible.
Absolutely. Kobe is a wonderful city for families. The gourmet and sightseeing experiences work well for all ages, and Mt. Rokko has trails suited to older children with reasonable fitness. For families, I'll always suggest routes and activities that match the group's youngest and least experienced members — the priority is that everyone enjoys the day, not just the most active participants. Please mention your children's ages when you contact me so I can tailor the suggestions accordingly.
Yes, and this is important to mention early. Japan's food culture has traditionally used ingredients like dashi (fish stock), soy, sesame, and shellfish extensively — even in dishes that might not seem to contain them. I'll always brief restaurant staff thoroughly about any allergies or dietary needs before the meal. I'm experienced with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, and shellfish-free requirements. The more specific you can be, the better I can plan — please include full details when you reach out.
Kobe is extremely easy to reach from both cities. From Osaka, the Hankyu or Hanshin train lines run directly to central Kobe (Sannomiya) in around 25–35 minutes. From Kyoto, the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe takes just 15 minutes, or a direct express train via Osaka takes under an hour. Kobe also makes an excellent day trip from either city if you're not staying overnight. I'm happy to advise on the best transport options based on where you're staying.
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are the most important item — trail running shoes or light hiking boots work well. Layers are recommended as mountain temperatures can differ from the city. In summer, UV protection and plenty of water are essential; in winter, warm mid-layers and gloves. For the 8-hour course, trekking poles are helpful but not required. I'll send a detailed packing list once your trek is confirmed, tailored to the season and your specific route.
I guide primarily in English. My English is fluent and natural, shaped by 16 years of daily use while living and working in New Zealand. I also speak Japanese natively, which allows me to handle all arrangements, reservations, and local interactions on your behalf. You don't need to know any Japanese to travel comfortably with me.
My core expertise is Kobe and the Hyogo region, and that's where I can offer the deepest value. However, I'm happy to share general recommendations for other parts of Japan, suggest how to structure a multi-city trip that includes Kobe, or advise on the best ways to combine a Kobe visit with Kyoto, Osaka, or Hiroshima. Just ask — I'll help however I can.
The best time to ask is before you book. Use the contact form to send any question, however small, and I'll reply personally and promptly.
